The finishes that photograph best on install day aren’t always the ones you’ll thank yourself for in year five. Ageing gracefully is its own design goal — and it’s mostly about restraint.

Let the expensive things be quiet

Spend on the surfaces you touch and replace least — cabinetry, counters, hardware, flooring — and keep them calm. Neutral, honest materials read as intentional far longer than a bold finish tied to a single season.

Save the trend for the cheap layer

Paint, textiles and light fixtures are where a trend belongs: low commitment, easy to swap. Anchor the home in materials that don’t date, and let the mood change with the things that are meant to.
